The Altes Stadthaus in Berlin-Mitte was built between 1902 and 1911 as an extension to the Red Town Hall. After World War II, the towered building designed by city architect Ludwig Hoffmann became the seat of the Council of Ministers of the GDR. After reunification, it was proposed to Helmut Kohl as the Federal Chancellery.

A major part of the building was destroyed during the World War II but it was later painstakingly conserved and rebuilt. After the construction of a New Town house, the Altes Stadthaus was less frequented by the city's residents as it could not accommodate the Berlin.
